Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is included in the group of drugs known as HMG CoA reductase inhibitors or commonly known as statins that reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) along triglycerides in the blood as well as increase the good cholesterol (HDL). This medication treats high cholesterol due to lower stroke, heart attack, or any heart complications.

Take Lipitor (Atorvastatin) as prescribed.
Do not under or overdose this medication. Follow instructions on the label.
Take this medication once at the same time each day, every day and without regards to food.
Dosage may be changed according to needs.
Store this medication away from heat, moisture and light.
Missed dose:
Take as soon as remembered.
Skip if next dose is less than 12 hours away. Do not double dose.
Overdose:
Seek emergency medical help.
Important:
- Proper diet must be followed; avoid eating high fat foods or those that is rich in cholesterol.
- Avoid drinking alcohol as it can increase risk of liver damage because it increases triglyceride levels.
- Grapefruit and its products must not be taken in conjunction with this medication due to dangerous effects.
- Regularly monitor blood and liver function.
- Treatment includes diet, exercise, and weight control. Long term treatment may be required for those who have high cholesterol.
- Do not take if allergic to it or have liver disease.
- Do not take if pregnant or breast-feeding.
- Inform health care provider if you have kidney or liver disease, thyroid problem, diabetes, muscle pain or weakness, or is an alcoholic.
- There are rare cases of Lipitor causing a condition that leads to skeletal muscle tissue breakdown, or kidney or liver failure.
- Some medications interact with Lipitor and must not be taken with it. Inform health care provider of medications that are being taken may it be prescribed or not prescribed, a dietary supplement, herbal preparations, or vitamins.
Stop taking this medication if you develop:
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Uncontrolled seizures
- Severely low blood pressure
- Severe infection or illness
- Surgery or medical emergency
Stop taking this medication and seek emergency medical help for these symptoms:
- Severe allergic reactions
- Unexplained muscle weakness, tenderness, or pain
- Fever, unusual fatigue, dark urine
- Nausea, jaundice, stomach pain, anorexia, clay-colored stools
Common side effects:
- Diarrhea
- Mild nausea
- Mild muscle pain
