Synthroid
Synthroid (Levothyroxine) is used to treat low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism). It can also be used for treating or preventing enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) that is usually caused by hormone imbalances, surgery, radiation treatment, or cancer.

Product Description
Use Synthroid directly as prescribed.
Take this medication on an empty stomach, usually 30 minutes before meals and with a full glass of water.
Store this medication between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F) in a light resistant container, keeping it tightly closed.
Keep away from excess heat, light, and moisture. Keep this away from pets and children.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Synthroid is used to replace the hormones produced by the thyroid gland for regulation of energy and metabolism of the body.
Synthroid is only given when the body is not able to produce the necessary hormones required.
Missed Dose
Take the missed medication as soon as remembered. If it is time for the next dose, skip the dose that was missed then continue with the previous dose schedule. Do not double dose.
More Information:
- Do not use Synthroid if you are allergic to it or its components, have a history of heart attack, adrenal gland problems, chest pain, or untreated high levels of thyroid hormone.
- Synthroid may cause choking and gagging, difficulty swallowing, or stuck tablet due to easy disintegration and rapid swelling of the medication. These problems are managed by taking Synthroid with a full glass of water.
- Inform health care provider regarding medications taken especially blood thinners, dosage of Synthroid will be adjusted.
- Synthroid may affect blood sugar, thus, diabetic patients must use this with caution.
- Laboratory tests must be done regularly while taking Synthroid. Keep appointments.
- It is not known if Synthroid can harm fetus. Synthroid can be found in breast milk. Discuss risks and benefits with health care provider.
- Caution Synthroid use in children as it may affect overall growth.
